Drive errors right out of the gate

64GB mSATA purchased for use in a pfSense firewall project. Throws an unrecoverable parity/CRC error during installation and operation. Reinstalled and reinstalled but nothing changed. Put in Kingston mSATA, which works without problems, so no cables or motherboard. Overall very disappointed with this product and its launch was delayed by a week while waiting for another drive.

Pros
  • Computers and Accessories
Cons
  • The list will be long.

Unrecoverable CRC errors

Like the other reviewer, I bought this 64GB hard drive to install pfsense on (2.4.5-p1). I installed it in msata slot in Protectli FW2B. I booted from the flash drive, followed the pfsense tui installation wizard and after choosing my partition scheme (tried both gpt and mbr) I immediately started throwing "uncorrectable crc" errors. Maybe this is some weird incompatibility with pfsense, or maybe transcend is just crappy qa/binning. It doesn't work for me anyway, so they send it back and I use…

It gets along with its task, it slows down a bit when writing

Worthy, it worked without problems in the Protectli Mini-PC. This particular 128GB model has a usable size large enough for limited storage space or an uncrowded system drive. In simple unbuffered testing (1MB blocks), I found that it was much slower on writes (128MB/s) than on reads. (487MB/s). As is typical of inexpensive flash-based storage, the numbers are likely to change with age ("lower" when writing) and will be faster if managed with OS-provided buffering. I consider Transcend to be a…

Does not work with Protectli/XSK NUC. CRC error

If you are purchasing this for an Intel NUC computer and installing the PFSense firewall software, continue. this combination leads to CRC errors. One of the positives is that I used it on a computer to install Mint Linux and it worked great. Maybe this disk doesn't like the BSD kernel.

Pros
  • GOLS certified
Cons
  • Many things

Fatal CRC errors with pfsense

Installs this as part of a hardware firewall kit. My router has been randomly shutting down at least every few weeks since installing it a few months ago. Every time the console is flooded with unrecoverable CRC errors, it crashes. I bought another mSATA from a different manufacturer to test.

Pros
  • understandable even for the old
Cons
  • reliability
