Highly Efficient Universal Hub Puller by TruePower 20-2029 Review

Ideal for removing brake drums from air-cooled VW vehicles. Where I used to be able to usually remove brake drums by tapping the perimeter with a sledgehammer, I've had a case where this method just didn't work. VW manuals have always shown it as a tool to get things done, I ran for the money and took it. God, this should have happened decades ago. The drums come off so easily. The wood turner is set up to bang with a sledgehammer and on unyielding drums.

I bought this puller because I couldn't remove the tapered brake drums from a 1950's Chrysler rear axle. I apply a penetrating lubricant to the axle every day for a week. When I received the puller, I installed it, tightened it and heated the drum with a flashlight. I then applied a percussion gun to the puller and applied enough torque that I bent the 9/16 screws (see photo). The barrels were eventually released undamaged. The puller worked perfectly. I was a little skeptical just what is nominally cheaper than all the others but it works. This is the tool you need if you have tapered axle drums like on my Studebaker 52. I would have preferred the tool to have 5 levers but the 3 that were there did a great job removing the drum. It seems a bit sketchy at first, but after everything was gently pushed down in small increments and given a few hard hits of the hammer, it came out beautifully. Used to remove seized brake drums on an old VW that had sat for 20 years with the parking brake on. Needless to say, the drums were so rusted that nothing worked. Since the old VWs had thin metal wheels that the eye bolts went into, they weren't long enough to use this puller (allows me to bolt it on, but not long enough to grab or place my feet where it is necessary), so I need them longer. I used this to remove the hubs from the tapered axles on my Stude 39 and finally it worked on the second one I bought. Don't forget to lubricate the threaded shaft. The first one I bought stuck because the round thing that the hooks attach to is just aluminum. After grabbing this round piece, he simply turned around and the shaft with the hooks stayed in place. The bushing puller is fine and can do the job but I don't think I would recommend it to anyone for any particular reason. The threaded bolt is too short. Even if you look at the display picture, you can see that the screw stops exactly where the puller attaches to the lugs. So how is he supposed to pull at this point to remove the hub? I had a drum on my old Ford that turned with a lot of force and after a few hammer hits on the spindle it came off easily. Since the drum spun freely, I was able to remove it by hand. I understand it coming straight from China but it actually worked well. I use this to easily remove all drum brakes.
