Description of πŸ“· VILTROX 85mm F/1.8 Mark II STM: AF Auto Focus Lens for Sony E-Mount Cameras A7III, A7RIII, A7SII, A7II, a6500, a6400, a6300

A stepping motor (STM) is used to drive the autofocus and the lens features a minimum focusing distance of 80cm (2.62ft). The front filter size is 72mm and integrated contacts power the aperture mechanism and deliver EXIF data to compatible Sony cameras. The lens, which has an aperture range of F1.8 to F16, is designed for full-frame Sony cameras, but also works as a 127.5mm equivalent on APS-C cameras. It's constructed of ten elements in seven groups, including one extra-low dispersion element and four specialty elements made from 'highly transparent glass,' which reduces aberrations and improves color rendering. Uses an 'HD Nano' multi-layer coating on individual elements to minimize ghosting and flares. The lens is an integrated microUSB port located on the rear metal mount of the lens. This connector is used to upgrade the lens' firmware.

Great lens for the price!

Surprisingly good lens. Outstanding image quality and autofocus performance. The only thing to note is that the lens firmware makes it a bit finicky at times (my Sony a7iii doesn't recognize it right away, for example). However, this doesn't happen often and is easily fixed by simply removing the lens and putting it back on. Overall a great lens, especially for the price!

Pros
  • It consists of ten elements in seven groups, including one extra-low dispersion element and four special "high-clear glass" elements that reduce aberrations and improve color reproduction.
Cons
  • Low maintainability

Damn, that's all I can say! Like it a lot!

Yes, I reluctantly tried this lens. Sorry for the pun. I'm really impressed with the results. I have an A7III and used Nikon's customized Tamron glass (which worked great. When matching anything other than a focal length (fixed focal length lens) it would take a shot and then freeze. So I decided to get this particular lens invest/try and see the quality of it Results WOW!

Pros
  • A lens with an aperture range of F1.8 to F16, designed for full-frame Sony cameras, but also works as a 127.5mm equivalent for APS-C cameras.
Cons
  • Update Availability

Amazing picture quality at an amazing price

I don't know how the hell Viltrox did it, but with this lens they have created a real gem. It looks well made, mostly metal (as far as I can tell) and feels pretty solid. It's also fairly heavy, but not so heavy that the A7-series chassis feels unbalanced. Autofocus is fast, generally fairly accurate, and quiet. It tends to yaw a bit in low light, especially at small apertures, but in most cases this isn't a huge issue. The picture quality is much better than I expected, especially in terms of…

Pros
  • Uses "HD Nano" multilayer coating on individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare.
Cons
  • The list will be long.
