ViTiny Digital Microscope Measurement Function Review

This is a worthy replacement for the Intel microscope from many years ago. Easy to use, requires a little concentration, but the field of view is acceptable.

Nice little webcam. The best part is the variable zoom. Built-in lights are also useful, but they can blur the image a bit. The built-in light also has a variable brightness scale on the side, which is very convenient. We used the software that came with it so I can't comment on that, we used Picasa to take the screenshots.

This product might be good for some purposes but I needed something to get some close up shots of old coins for sale. It's just not the right thing for it. It looks like nothing else. Focusing is a little tricky as there is a time lag between where you position the camera and when the image on the computer screen becomes clear. However, the photo opportunities are good.

I buy various cheap digital webcam microscopes that you can find everywhere. They are cheap and somehow crappy (optics, structure, functions, bugs). But this microscope is surprisingly well built. The small stand is actually made of steel and is quite stable. Focus and lighting controls are both manual and on the device itself, so you don't have to fiddle with autofocus or excessive light brightness. Done I was working on Ubuntu (10.4, old version!). I'm happy with that.

Easy to use if you just want to see the subject up close and take a picture. Difficult to use if you want to use the included image measurement and comparison software. The USB connection comes in and out regularly. The instruction manual was clearly written by someone who does NOT speak English. Broken English and often pointless instructions. I've been using the ViTiny UM02 in professional labs for a few years now; Checking, among other things, the integrity of solder joints on circuit boards for military applications (and much more). I simply CANNOT afford to be wrong by saying "PASS" or "FAIL" to parts that can mean the difference between life and death for their users. Ordered this webcam based on a recommendation from others on here. Some observations: 1) The software that Oasis Scientific provides for this camera on their website only allows you to capture images up to 640 x 480 pixels. That's 0.3MP, not the claimed 2MP resolution. I also tried the alternatives they referred to (Yawcam among others), similar solutions followed. Out of curiosity I tried Photobooth and Mixscope on a Mac, the results are the same as on Windows, ie neither of these programs…
