We have terrible water from our well. I installed this pre-filter in front of the water softener and carbon filter for the whole house. I've found that the quality of the pre-filter actually makes a big difference. They do a great job and last at least twice as long as cheaper filters and are at least worth the extra price to us.

They recommend stopping the water for 15 minutes after installation. We didn't run it that long but we did run it for a few minutes and would recommend it as the charcoal turns the water quite gray. As soon as I put that filter back in place and started the water, the smell was gone. The taste is much better and I don't notice any yellow spots. We're told our city drivers say we have clean drinking water, but when I inspect my used water filter and its container, after three months of filtration, I see dark brown water and fine debris.
