I've wanted to upgrade my monitor for a long time, but this is the second monitor I've bought in the last month and I'm not happy with it. The first monitor I bought was the Sony Playstation 3D Display for $180; It had a beautiful picture, really great crisp colors and a glossy screen (which I really liked). The first issue I had with this display was that the left speaker made a crackling noise when I plugged my PS3 into it, but the real issue was the black (also a deep dark red) moving across the screen. -- It's hard to explain, but whether it's in game or on desktop, when something black moves across the screen, the black color is kind of smeared and doesn't update properly. You could get rid of about 85% of this effect by turning the screen off and on again and then scrolling through all the 3D settings (i.e. hitting the button three times), but it was still bad enough to really bother me when gaming (very bad in Borderlands 2 and AVP), also it was very annoying to do this every time the monitor was turned off. Colored text and text on colored backgrounds were also quite blurry. I play a lot, and by the way the 3D I saw on it had a lot of ghosting (at least a lot more than the Samsung 8000 series) so with all these problems I had to return the screen. I've only given a quick overview of the Playstation display because that's my main comparison with this Asus monitor. The colors and image on the Asus don't match what the Sony display offers, but I knew what was going on. I just needed a solid gaming/coding monitor that would be a good upgrade for my LG W2040 (which was a great monitor at around $100). When I got the Playstation display, I realized I couldn't go back to a 20-inch monitor, and the Asus VS247h-p was by far the best deal at $148 after the discount. After seeing all the great reviews on this monitor I bought it I really like the size and look of this monitor but the first thing that struck me when I installed the monitor was how crooked it sits - the spot , where the neck connects to the monitor itself seems to have been bent at some point, but that's not my main problem with the monitor as I could probably bend it back to its original position (I don't want to bend it if I don't leave him). It's a red stuck/dead pixel staring at me from the middle left third of the screen. I was really hoping I wouldn't get a horrible stuck/dead pixel, especially with the return policies from companies like Asus where you need 4 dead pixels somewhere before they do anything about it, but I think I got lucky. ll software to fix the problem and a few other pixel revival methods, but it's definitely here to stay. Some people don't even bother with dead pixels while others are crazy about them and I'm definitely one of the latter. This is actually my first dead pixel and it's really driving me crazy. Problem enough for me that while the Playstation display was at least inferior in every way that suited my needs, I'd leave it at the top of this screen with some of the problems it has. A dead pixel isn't the only issue I've had with this monitor though, as I'm really unhappy with the severe backlight blur that appears at the bottom of the screen (this is the worst I've ever seen on a TV ). . /Monitor). To be honest, the backlight bleeds all over the screen, but it's worst at the bottom edge and especially in the lower right corner where the light has an almost bluish tint. It's really bad on almost any dark gray and sometimes more distracting than I thought. Of course, this monitor has some quirks; First, it's really bright (too bright out of the box) and it has nice deep blacks (where there's no glare) and white whites. As I mentioned before, I like the size of the monitor (23.6 inches) and I also appreciate the very sharp image quality (though not as good as the Playstation display in my opinion). I was also able to get the colors where I wanted. but I had to use the NVIDIA Control Panel and Windows Settings to get them. The monitor has HDMI, DVI-D and VGA connections, as well as an audio output that allows you to receive sound via HDMI (PS3 or 360) if required. Viewing angles are pretty solid, except that tilting your head down or placing the monitor overhead gives the worst results. The main reason I chose this screen is that it supports 1080P resolution with 2ms latency. (GTG) Response Time. You can actually tweak the Response Time/Anti-Ghosting to your liking with the TraceFree option, which may seem pointless, but sometimes maxing this setting out is really too high, and in real life you end up with motion blur when you're spinning fast , some might want everything to be as realistic as possible. really breathed new life into my games - I mainly play Borderlands 2 now and it looks great on this screen (colors really pop and response time makes a huge difference). Now I have a lot more space to write code, which is good, but monitoring issues are really preventing me from fully enjoying all of its positive aspects. It's really down to luck with monitors these days, and I haven't had much luck with it. It would be a real pain for me to return this screen but the more I use it the more I think I will return it because right now I'm just not happy with it even for $150. Part of my doubt comes from the fact that I just don't know if the backlight issue is normal for these monitors or not, and there's always a chance I'll get two dead pixels on the next monitor. I would greatly appreciate comments letting me know if the backlight bleeding I'm experiencing is normal. For the record, if this monitor didn't have the three issues I mentioned, I'd happily give it five stars, and it would be perfect in my book, especially considering it costs $150. If I send it back and get another one I'll update this review if needed but for now I'm very disappointed with the issues it's having so I think all that matters deserves 2.5 stars. ********* **********Updated on 12/06/2012. For some reason my other update doesn't show up here, but it mainly dealt with a blue-red tint from the bottom of the monitor to the top. I had to wait a long time to return the monitor because Revain had been out of stock for a while and I didn't want to pay for a new one and wait for a refund. I was lucky though because the night I went to return it was back in stock and I was able to exchange it. I did the return process over the weekend and on Tuesday morning the monitor was waiting outside my door. I'm happy to report that the new monitor is great and so far I haven't noticed any of the issues I've had before. Well, I suspect there's a slight glow on the left side of the monitor if I'm picky about that, but you'll have to look for it and given all the issues my previous one had, I'm more than happy with that. If you get a good one, you will love it! I'm changing my rating from 2 to 5 stars.
