I bought the Smart Extruder+ because my original Smart Extruder kept slipping.

I bought the Smart Extruder+ because my original Smart Extruder kept slipping and getting stuck on my Makerbot Z18. First of all, the new Smart Extruder+ was a huge improvement. Prints ran well for 10-15 hours and I never had to unload and reload filament. But after a few weeks and less than 200 operating hours, the new extruder failed. The prints were under-extruded, with gaps between layers making the details brittle, and I only used MarkerBot PLA. It's not a filament issue, the issue doesn't

Only the best of a new overpriced used kit. :/

I'm one of those customers that Makerbot is desperately trying to fill in a memory hole: the fifth-generation first-time buyer, the overpriced Alphaware product they planted on an unsuspecting public. many stuck Smart Extruders in my 5th (and like everyone else stunned by their "Ha we fixed that, no more replacements" policy which turned out to be a much bigger lie) I ended up buying a Smart Extruder+ as my last extruder: Once it dies, my 5th gen and Makerbot don't get a dime. Worst extruder in production, avoid the extruder and the printer it works with.

It's just terrible. I really can't say enough horrible things about her, but still. I have extruder number 5. Every extruder from my original smart extruder through these 5 replacement smart extruders+ is clogged or had a complete sensor failure. I run my Makerbot with slip detection (or whatever they call it) so as not to void the extruder warranty. With the setting turned on, they still get stuck, tearing prints off the bed and stuffing themselves with heaps of PLA. The filament sensor…
