What is Gate
GT (GateToken) is the native token of Gate Chain, an EVM-compatible layer-1 blockchain connected to the Gate crypto exchange group. GT pays transaction fees, sets consensus weight and is staked to secure Gate Chain and its layer-2 network, Gate Layer.
Network and consensus
| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Type | EVM-compatible layer-1 blockchain |
| Consensus | GateMint proof of stake: a Tendermint-based framework using Algorand-style VRF for node election |
| Launched | 29 June 2020 (Gate Chain mainnet) |
| Smart contracts | Yes, through an EVM module |
| Layer 2 | Gate Layer, an OP Stack layer-2 that settles on Gate Chain and is backed by GT staking; mainnet launched 25 September 2025 |
Supply and issuance
| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Fee burn | Part of each transaction fee is destroyed; an EIP-1559-style base fee burn was added in a network upgrade |
| Buyback and burn | GT is also reduced by periodic buyback-and-burn |
| Staking rewards | Consensus nodes earn block rewards and a share of fees; misbehaviour leads to slashing of staked GT |
What GT is used for
- Paying transaction fees on Gate Chain
- Determining consensus weight and staking by validators
- Voting in governance, with delegation allowed
- Securing Gate Layer through GT staking
Who develops and governs Gate
- Company
- Gate (the Gate crypto exchange group); the Gate Chain website carries the Gate brand
- Governance
- On-chain voting weighted by GT holdings, with delegation
- Open source
- Code is published in the gatechain GitHub organisation
History
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| 29 June 2020 | Gate Chain mainnet launches, focused on asset security and decentralized trading. |
| 25 September 2025 | Gate Layer, an OP Stack layer-2 settling on Gate Chain, launches on mainnet. |
| 15 September 2025 | Gate Chain mainnet upgraded to versions v19 and v20. |
Security and audits
- Vault accounts allow transfers to be revoked within a set period and redirected to a retrieval account, to address theft and lost keys.
- A revocable transaction model also lets abnormal proposals or malicious operations be reversed within a certain timeframe.
Risks and caveats
- Some transactions and governance actions on Gate Chain can be reversed within a set period, so finality differs from chains without this feature.
- Staked GT can be slashed for malicious behaviour by a consensus node.
- The network is closely tied to a single company, the Gate exchange group.

Questions and answers
What is Gate (GT)?
GT (GateToken) is the native token of Gate Chain, used for fees, consensus weight, staking and governance.
How does Gate Chain reach consensus?
Gate Chain uses GateMint, a proof-of-stake system built on a Tendermint-based framework with VRF node election, giving instant finality.
When did Gate Chain launch?
Gate Chain mainnet launched on 29 June 2020; its layer-2, Gate Layer, launched on 25 September 2025.
Is GT deflationary?
Part of every transaction fee is burned, and GT is also reduced by periodic buyback-and-burn.

How voting works
Votes are anonymous and carry no text. Each device has one vote per item; press the same button again to remove it. Cloudflare Turnstile checks that a person is voting. We keep a random device ID in a cookie and a salted hash of the IP address to limit abuse — no names, no accounts. Votes are visitors’ opinions, not investment advice.
