I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good read and .

I have not read any of Adrien's works and look forward to continuing the family saga in her next books. There were only a few times that I felt like it was stuck. It was stable, interesting, and I really cared about the characters. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good read and an understanding of the historical period. Good book! I'm adding this a few years later as I saw an EDIT on the site and I wanted Adrienne to know (since I can't comment ANYWHERE on her site anymore!) that her

A Tale of Love and Addiction in Post-Civil War America

The best historical stories place us in a different setting. The same goes for Adrienne Morris' ambitious novel The House on Tenafly Road. I was expecting to see a nostalgic view of a New Jersey village almost 150 years ago. But what I found between the covers was the gripping story of a complex man whose early childhood in poverty was multiracial (Delaware Indian and British) and whose battle wounds during the Civil War nearly destroyed his life and family. John Weldon is a brave and noble…

A Civil War Story Rarely Shared

Life gets complicated when Civil War veteran and morphine addict John Weldon marries a suburban McCullough family on the eve of Reconstruction and the Indian Wars. First, how can he hide his addiction from the family who admires him? And how can he keep his position in the army? Probably most importantly, how can he break this habit so it doesn't destroy everything he's built? Book 1 in the series is a carefully crafted story that chronicles the life of a Civil War veteran returning to a world…

It drags on and gets lost in its own story

I have the impression that this book was published without editing. Paragraphs move back and forth, which sometimes doesn't make sense. The concept of the story is fine as there aren't many historical novels that deal with drug addiction resulting from trauma during the Civil War, but the narrator keeps getting stuck. The characters don't seem to have any real power, and perhaps the author wanted them to be superficial. It took a long time to come to a conclusion. This story could have been…

LONG and absorbing fiction

I saw that this book is about 600 pages. It didn't scare me, but I wondered if I would write such a long book? I was. For 3 full days. I really liked the house on Tenefly Road. It's an interesting story with well-written characters that I really enjoyed. The history of the Civil War is well researched and accurate. There were many educational and fascinating aspects of the Civil War and the military in general that I found interesting. I loved how the character of Katherine went mainstream and…
