Economical straight edges for use in print shops

Standard steel rulers Cheap replacement Cons: Daily use for over a month will result in peeling of the orange paint. (This will not happen on 24" and 48"). Must be replaced every year or so after wear. If your blade slips, cut the ruler and easily leave slits on the straight edge. Because it's aluminum Overall it's a lot cheaper than its steel counterparts and a lot lighter, so I'll keep replacing them when the need arises.

Pros
  • Available in 24", 36", 48", 72" and 96" lengths
Cons
  • Unbelievable price

Great Bang for Buck - Beware the muddy bottom.

This is a well-made product, but it's worth noting that depending on your intended use, it may not be for you. There is a plastic material on the bottom of the ruler to prevent it from slipping. This is very valuable in many cases, but when you're trying to align something precisely, this feature can get in the way. The pin sticks to the synthetic material, greatly reducing your measurements. Great return if you plan to use it on slightly warped surfaces, but for prep work on cast iron platesโ€ฆ

Pros
  • 1/16 inch scale
Cons
  • Unfashionable

Used daily in a print shop

We use this daily in a print shop. It's lighter than others, which is great for women. The 4 foot length is perfect when compared to the 43 inch purple safety stirrups currently in use. My main concern is that I don't think they will last as long as the other more expensive safety lines we have. It lasts 1 - I think 2 years with daily continuous use. The other purple safety rulers we use have lasted over 6 years and still work, they have a steel edge but this one doesn't. Thin metal shavingsโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Sturdy workmanship
Cons
  • Was damaged

Flat, straight and precise

I have several Swanson products and have owned them for many years, this is just my newest tool. I'm going to be using this Savage 72" Straight Edge for woodworking, so it's important that it's flat and straight (within tolerance). It's very flat and very straight. Go to a company like Swanson and buy it several good quality items without going there broken Second and probably most important is customer service I asked a question about the 72" Savage and the company contacted me. They answeredโ€ฆ

Pros
  • New
Cons
  • Slightly torn

Pros: Looks great. (Hook 'em!) Although I already had a metal criterium, I chose it because the shape makes it rigid and easier to manipulate. Unexpected: A soft floor is both an advantage and a disadvantage. It's nice that the tool isn't scratched; but the edge doesn't sit directly opposite what's underneath. This small gap makes it more difficult to use as a ruler for drawing or cutting (compared to, say, my unlined metal ruler). Cons: First, the lining is lining material - small dots of foam

Pros
  • Inspires confidence
Cons
  • Out of fashion
