Video works but NO USB connection

Many StarTech products have been used with great success over the years. Unfortunately this kvm extension fails. The 1280 x 1024 analog video ran fine, but after two people spent over two hours using it, we couldn't get the USB extension to work with the DELL 1RU server. return device.

Pros
  • Free for educational purposes
Cons
  • Some shortcomings

the time will show. good for computer components

I have hardware that needs to work from a locally attached computer, but I wanted to be able to control the computer from another room (about 100 feet away). After installing it, I immediately had problems, so I called tech support. The tech support person didn't seem to know much about this model (SV565UTPU) but was very helpful and gave me the right information. I found that despite my assumption at the time of purchase, my model does not allow the use of both remote and local keyboard/mouseโ€ฆ

looks nice - but that's all

It just didn't work. I spent a good 10 hours of my time getting it to work. I bought it because it was around $140 which I think was a good deal compared to AdderLink's USB/Video KVM Extenders which cost around $350 new. I just wanted to extend the HP touchmonitor 50 feet from his computer. I finally managed to transmit a decent video signal, but it NEVER read signals from the mouse or keyboard, or even the touchmonitor itself. I'll keep working on this in my "free time" but I have no hopeโ€ฆ

Device not quite as advertised

If you need something that will work with both remote KVM and local KVM, this could be for you. What isn't clearly explained is whether you have to press a button on the device for the device you're on to take control of the KB, monitor, and mouse. I needed both sides to work independently (each end can be used at any time or even together) and not require device interaction as they would be placed in closets and out of reach of end users. If clicking a button to change controls works for youโ€ฆ

SV565UTPU Overview

There is some confusion as to why the SV565UTPU is a power strip and not a power strip and switch. StarTech doesn't describe the functionality very well. The host end of the extender alternates between local/console control of KVM and sending a KVM signal to the remote console. The remote console can switch between remote control of the main PC and local control of the second PC. Therefore, it can be considered a two-port KVM at the remote end, which is a nice feature compared to similarโ€ฆ

Remote KVM in computer components

ideal for multiple applications. I used this to simply send a VGA Cat5 signal to a remote monitor. I have also used it as a remote KVM. You connect the keyboard, mouse and VGA monitor and can control your computer as if you were sitting in front of it. Another great feature is AB switching. So you can have a keyboard and mouse monitor both local and remote on the PC, and it will automatically switch control back and forth depending on who is using it. A small bug I noticed is that you usuallyโ€ฆ

NOT GOOD. Electronics

Gets a 2 star rating from me. It is used to carry VGA/USB signals, correct, BUT video quality is lost as the cable length increases. This might not be a big deal to some people, but the main issue is the keyboard signal and responsiveness. The keyboard can then not recognize and enter all keystrokes, which makes it impossible to enter a password, for example! This problem exists regardless of distance. Tried with 5 feet of cable and 500 feet of cable and both results are the same: NOT GOOD.

Pros
  • Looking forward to it
Cons
  • weak

REALLY 5 STARS for Computer Components

If you work with a lot of computer systems like I have over the years this will almost become a must have when needed! These devices can do a lot more than what I currently use them for. In fact, I only use this device as a 150ft remote control device for an HD-SDI computer routing system. I use a remote monitor, mouse and keyboard. I could use it with another computer routing system's monitor, keyboard and mouse, but I prefer a dual monitor system to an all-in-one system. But I know that Iโ€ฆ
