Extech MO55 – Dual-function Moisture Meter for Pin/Pinless Testing Review

Perfectly working moisture meter. The only reason for the two star rating is that I didn't even last a year before it started failing. This time we focus on a different brand.

I used a $500 moisture meter. It's 2 in 1, it's awesome. It's easier to hold. The beep helps. And it seems to work just as well as my $500 block. I've found myself using it more now.

We've tried this thing on ceramic tile, porcelain stoneware and parquet. We have carefully read the instructions and changed the batteries several times, but we are still not sure if it works. There are some readings as if they might be okay, and then right next to that we get some crazy readings.

I have probably a dozen Extech meters in my water drying shop. great meters. Weak point - pins and pin attachment. So I bought this cheap one because I'm tired of buying and breaking expensive ones. So far it's as good as the expensive ones. Let's see how the pins hold up.

I like that the screen is big and the orange silicone grips help to hold the device. I also like that the test device comes very conveniently in a cap with a needle, rather than in a separate little pouch that gets lost and no one knows what it is. The only advice I'd like to give is to attach the pen cover with a dangling string so it doesn't move and is always attached.

This device was purchased for contactless use. Worked well enough when I first used it. A few weeks later I tried touchless mode and the readings were consistently at 90% or higher even when nothing was touched (should be 0% in this case). The device is defect. I've tried turning off the power, changing the batteries, etc. but to no avail. Note that in this case "pin mode" still seemed to work, but wasn't suitable for my needs. Returned/replaced the block with Revain. And the second device did…

This is one of those products where you get what you pay for. I've used it 3 times and the 3rd time it only shows 0% no matter what mode it's set to. I replaced the battery, it still reads 0% even on a wet piece of drywall. I called customer service and lo and behold they also said the unit was defective after doing all the phone testing for them and they told me it was still under warranty. Then when I quit my job, go to a UPS store, wait in line, pay for the packaging, ship it back somewhere…
