Buy genuine part

The original Kohler muffler works much better in my Rialto bowl than the previous universal muffler. You can't have rear stem stretch as this flap has a hard plastic stem. It should last longer, but of course it works perfectly right out of the box. The only thing to note is that the bar goes into the slots on the back, not snapped into place.

Pros
  • Good product for the price
Cons
  • I vaguely remember

The seal doesn't always form because it moves back and forth too much

I have a shallow toilet that uses this type of valve and the one I've had for years finally caught on to break so i replaced it with this one and like 1 out of 10 flushes it never fills up or stops the flow of water because a seal is not formed. It's like it's too loose from side to side. So if your flush handle can't perfectly lift this valve straight up and drop straight down, it will end up off center and won't stop moving.

Pros
  • Consistent test results
Cons
  • Only available in black

Crappy replacement part

When one of the valves on my Kohler toilet started leaking (causing the toilet to refill intermittently), I found this part on the Kohler website. The original is not available, but the company has stated that it is an official replacement part. So I replaced all three toilet valves in the house (they fail around the same time). The part looks the same but they appear to be a bit shorter so they don't seal as well as the original part. As a result, this often leads to leaky and leaking toilets.

  • This is awesome
Cons
  • Trade-in available

Not compatible with Kohler Rialto 3386 made in the mid 2000's

I bought this damper to fit Kohler Rialto one piece toilets. Our toilets were manufactured in 2008 and this damper does not fit. The damper itself is the right size, but the stem on the back of the damper is too thick to snap into the existing grooves on the back of the black overflow tube. The old valve has a thinner stem section that snaps into the black overflow tube and holds it in place. This model has a connecting rod thickness and therefore will not snap onto the overflow pipe. Please…

Not suitable. the best parts for the toilet

Will never buy a Kohler product again. I've never spent so much time trying to get a toilet flap to work in my life. This one, although exactly the model that should fit my toilet according to the instructions, did not fit because the diameter of the plastic bracket is too large. I bought the generic first but it didn't close properly, then I bought it from Amazon and it doesn't fit. Trying to save a few for a new toilet when I could get a 10% discount just by buying a new toilet is driving me…

Pros
  • Everything is fine!
Cons
  • Can't remember

Great product but the instructions could be clearer.

Genuine Kohler product, not counterfeit. I had to replace two at once and wasn't hoping for a "tank injury". Follow the visual instructions on the back of the packaging. Otherwise, you might think the item fell into place; Instead, it slides from right to left (depending on whether you have a left or right model). Also, when cutting your pull chain, don't get confused by the instructions that say "hang no more than three links". What this really means is that if more than three are loose (and…

A previously terrible design finally fixed

Kohler seems to have finally fixed the worst valve design in plumbing history. Previous generations of this damper (the only damper that fits some Kohler models) were made from a single piece of plastic, including a thin plastic axle that the damper pivots around. Over time, the plastic around the pivots and levers deformed, and the damper no longer stopped the flow of water into the canal. This problem has had me buying a new faucet about every year as Kohler designs that use this part usually

Good design in Rough Plumbing

This comment applies specifically to the Rialto and San Raphael toilets. These toilets have a somewhat unique flush valve that sits fairly close to the back of the cistern. Cast-in rod dampers are difficult to install. When you push the rod, you may hear a crackling sound. This is the sound of a slow leak that causes your toilet to fill up several times a day (or more often). You have just broken one or more of the 3 plastic tabs holding the flush valve in place. This one-piece design exists…

  • Ease of use

  • Reliability

Dear Kohler Design Team! What did you think you were doing?

This damper is perfect for my toilet, cheap price and fast delivery. Although if I hadn't read the reviews here (thanks to Irina G. and T. Hill; put the pin in the slot first) the 5 minute install would have been an excruciating nightmare. Hm. A disappointing nightmare? That perfectly describes how I feel taking care of my Kohler toilet! This very specific patented "Kohler GP84995 2" valve used in various one piece toilets is not available in my local stores and none of the "universal" valves…

Pros
  • Inspires confidence
Cons
  • Definitely a bad product
