SSD fried my motherboard

THIS LITERALLY FRIED MY MOTHERBOARD ON MY GAMING COMPUTER! I have a $2000 gaming laptop and was trying to install a new SSD for better performance and I used WD recommended migration software. First my computer started with a black screen. To test the SSD I also put it in my friend's laptop and the same thing happened. I took out my HDD and left the SSD in to see if anything changes. After that, my laptop wouldn't turn on anymore. No light when charging, tried several solutions but nothing…

Bait And Switch fits internal SSDs

I bought a couple of these drives for a couple of new builds. They seemed to work properly at first, but as I downloaded larger and larger files, the drives started to slow down. I mean crawl. Something was wrong with two hard drives. So I started looking for problems. I make sure the firmware is up to date, my chipset drivers are up to date as well. I even pulled out one of the drives, plugged it into the Intel based system and reinstalled windows to see if the problem related to AMD. The same

NOT NEW OPEN BOX - AMAZING PERFORMANCE!

Just arrived. The seal of the box is broken - it has already been opened. I'll try this and check the stats to see if it's been used. However, I am not happy about buying a "NEW" item and receiving an "Open Box" item! Update: I installed this and ran the diagnostics. It works 100% and is incredibly fast. Turns out it already has 1 hour of use and 1 power cycle. It's like having a new computer instead of a 2 year old computer. CONS: The included Acronis cloning software didn't work. I…

Acceptable as storage. Terrible as a countertop.

To be honest, I currently have a few of these drives on my NAS as read cache, configured to use less than half of their maximum capacity to maintain both speed and durability . They do an excellent job in this role and I honestly don't expect much from them as the NAS only connects via a 1GBE connection. Plugging it into your computer to use as a Steam drive or for your photos, music, movies or whatever would be perfectly adequate (although the 500 gigabyte version would be a little small for a

Excellent NVME performance ratio, slightly better than SATA SSD

Hard drives are undoubtedly a data transfer bottleneck, so it's always best to pursue a path that reduces potential bottlenecks as much as possible. I've posted a screenshot of a test showing the results for this NVME SSD on an ASUS ROG Strix X570-e motherboard with a Ryzen 7 3700X processor. The WD Blue SN550 really lives up to its sequential read performance specifications. However, actual NVME performance is only slightly better than a standard SATA SSD. It's definitely not that big of a…

**Update August 2021** Western Digital has downgraded this product with a slower, lower quality flash and kept the same name so products manufactured after July 2021 WILL NOT BE THE SAME. Especially when the SLC cache is full on new drives, the write performance on these updated models will be 50% SLOWER. This appears to be a permanent change as Western Digital has updated the SN550 spec sheet to reflect the new changes. The rave reviews for SSD SN550 prior to July 2021 are NO LONGER…

Does not disappoint; Just do your research!

My old bootable SSD Samsung 850 EVO 250GB kept overflowing, so it's time for an upgrade. This is my first NVME drive and it didn't disappoint. Lots of storage space, nice and fast. Sure, there are faster NVME drives out there, but for general use you really don't need anything faster (and you probably won't notice much of a difference anyway). It was very easy to install into the system and I love that there are no power or data cables to fiddle with. A few counterarguments based on other…

A fast drive for everyday mainstream computing at a GREAT price

Over the last 30 years I have owned, configured and built many computers. Hard drives have come a long way in terms of speed and reliability. Western Digital (WD), once headquartered in Irvine, California and now based in San Jose, was one of the leading manufacturers. and you get what you pay for: the slowest performance rather than the highest reliability. BLUE is best used for everyday use by general consumers. BLACK takes BLUE up a notch and delivers the best performance suitable for…
