Review on Dell S2817Q 4K HD LCD Monitor - High-Resolution Display (3840x2160p) - FBA_S2817Q by Kirt Knox

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Terrible contrast and inconsistency on the screen

Technically, it serves its purpose. It's a monitor and it's cheap. I wanted to give it 2 stars because if that's all you're interested in it will get the job done, if you're a college student looking for something to do coursework and then play video games it's great. The refresh rate is very fast, so gamers might like it. But I can't give 2 stars. I have to give 1 star. There is no scenario where this monitor would be acceptable, mine is now being returned for a refund. Unfortunately, that's pretty much the definition of a 1 star review. I'm a photographer and designer. I need good, accurate color representation, and that's nowhere near it. You can see a HUGE contrast difference from the top to the bottom of the monitor as if you were looking at an old school laptop display from an extreme angle. But even when viewed directly from the center of the screen at the right distance, the edges fade and lose contrast. Unsuitable, totally unsuitable. For a monitor to be of any use, it must have a wide enough field of view that the top pixels look the same as the bottom pixels, and the left pixels look the same as the right ones. This thing is so faded around the edges (especially the bottom half of the screen, which is at a steeper angle to your eyes than the top half) that it's literally impossible to edit photos with precision. doesn't care about contrast and only pays attention to the center of the screen, so you want the refresh rate it offers. Also, you should keep some other things in mind: - The materials it is made of are very fragile and cheap. - The stand has no tilt, it sits exactly parallel to the table and that's your only option. The controls are far from intuitive, the menus are difficult to navigate, and the buttons are so cramped that you have to keep one hand on the monitor while using the other hand to press the buttons to keep them from sliding across the table when pressed the keys bass, I literally get better sound quality from my iPhone sitting next to it on my desk. - When connecting to a 2018 Macbook Pro via HDMI-USB C, all audio controls on the computer were disabled. I had to adjust the volume with the terribly clumsy knobs mentioned above.
