What is Decentraland
Decentraland is a community-governed 3D virtual world in which ownership of land parcels (LAND), names and wearables is recorded on the Ethereum blockchain. MANA is its ERC-20 token, used to claim LAND, buy in-world goods and vote in the Decentraland DAO.
Network and consensus
| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Type | Virtual world application; MANA is an ERC-20 token |
| Runs on | Ethereum, with many Marketplace transactions on Polygon |
| Launched | Founded in 2015; publicly launched in 2020 |
| Smart contracts | LAND (LANDRegistry) and MANA (MANAToken) are defined by Ethereum smart contracts |
Supply and issuance
| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Maximum supply | Fixed supply ERC-20 token |
| Fee burn | MANA spent to claim new LAND parcels was burned by the LAND contract |
| Initial distribution | The DAO received a 10-year vesting contract of 222,000,000 MANA starting 19 February 2020 |
What MANA is used for
- Claiming LAND parcels (MANA was burned in the process)
- Buying wearables, emotes, names and other items in the Marketplace
- Voting power in the Decentraland DAO together with LAND, Estate and NAME holdings
Who develops and governs Decentraland
- Governance
- Decentraland DAO: proposals and votes via Snapshot; approved binding actions executed by a multisig committee overseen by a Security Advisory Board
- Foundation
- Decentraland Foundation, an independent non-profit that protects the IP and maintains the desktop client and core infrastructure
- Developer
- DCL Regenesis Labs, the DAO’s executive arm, overseen by an elected DAO Council
- Founders
- Esteban Ordano and Ariel Meilich (whitepaper authors, with Yemel Jardi)
- Open source
- Yes
History
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| 2015 | Decentraland project founded |
| 19 February 2020 | The DAO’s 10-year MANA vesting contract started; the virtual world launched publicly in 2020 |
| 14 November 2024 | Community vote established a DAO Council |
| 10 March 2025 | Community vote created an Executive Arm (DCL Regenesis Labs) to run DAO operations |
Security and audits
- The DAO does not own and cannot modify the MANA token contract
- Changes to the LAND and Estate contracts require a DAO vote and are carried out by the Security Advisory Board
Official MANA contracts
| Network | Contract address |
|---|---|
| Ethereum | 0x0f5d2fb29fb7d3cfee444a200298f468908cc942 |
MANA is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum; a bridged version is used on Polygon for Marketplace transactions.
Risks and caveats
- Binding DAO decisions are executed by multisig committees with trusted key holders
- The DAO can only act through a fixed set of predefined proposal types; changing its mechanisms is slow
- The Decentraland Foundation still maintains the desktop client and critical infrastructure services

How voting works
Votes are anonymous and carry no text. Each device has one vote per item; press the same button again to remove it. Cloudflare Turnstile checks that a person is voting. We keep a random device ID in a cookie and a salted hash of the IP address to limit abuse — no names, no accounts. Votes are visitors’ opinions, not investment advice.
