In our modern world, it serves a rather strange function. Who would have thought that in the technologically advanced year of 2020 we would buy coasters to charge our pencils. However, it worked great for two months. Looked good on my table. I felt solid. And most importantly, I charged my Apple Pencil. Then he continued to fulfill the first two points and stopped fulfilling the last point. So now it's a paperweight with a USB cable attached. I blew out the Lightning connector, tried plugging it into different USB ports, checked that the USB cable at the bottom of the stand is fully seated (it was screwed in, I thought maybe the screws had come loose). no Aside from the obvious downside of "it's stopped doing what it's supposed to be doing," there's no other sign of the pen charging. When my pencil first showed up at 0% I thought I had connected it incorrectly or something had happened, but I didn't get any warning that my pencil was out of juice. An LED to show the pen is charging would be a great addition.
