Wax and wick mismatch

I'm new to candle making and have read a lot about candle making. I tested this candle making kit by heating the included wax in a metal can according to the instructions. I didn't add any coloring or fragrance, just poured it into an old (cleaned) candle jar using one of the wicks. The candle came out pretty good. However, as soon as I lit it up, I saw something that many other reviewers have noticed. The wax pool wasn't very big. This wick size will fit a 1.5 to 2 inch diameter candle. It's fine, I put it in a large candle to test it and I can always add more wicks to larger containers. I also found the tin, being all metal, was too hot to hold while pouring without an oven mitt - The reason for the 2 star rating is that once lit the wick started to grow like a mushroom. This is when the top of the wick appears to be larger than the bottom of the wick (like a mushroom). I googled and found that this happens when the wax doesn't melt fast enough for the wick. This problem is solved by changing the wick type for the wax used (paraffin vs soy, etc.). This means that the supplied wicks and wax are not compatible.
