Review on Wileosix Bicycle Stem Top Cap Holder for Garmin/Wahoo Element Bolt Mount – Bike Stem Mount by William Groupp

Defective bracket and GPS

Bought less than a week ago. On my first and only ride with it, a chain broke (uphill). Didn't fall but hit the Garmin in the stomach breaking the stem mount and (unfortunately) one of the tabs on my Garmin (see photo). In the last 10 years, two plastic GPS mounts in front of the handlebars broke when I was mountain biking. In both cases, the mounts failed by design (to protect the Garmin eyelets). I suspect that the tabs on the GPS in the stem mount are more prone to damage since the plastic mount is encased in a metal ring (at the top of the stem). ). This allows the plastic bracket to absorb impact energy at certain angles and not at others (because the aluminum ring doesn't have enough play). Other than that, this mount seemed to work pretty well. The GPS didn't bother me while driving, and the mount is simple and light. It seems unfair to blame the folks who designed this particular stem mount, but lesson learned: mount the GPS in front of the handlebars when mountain biking. (I ordered a different mount and Garmin "Dog Ears" repair kit).
