When a thunderstorm came to my ASUS RT-N66U, taking out the USB ports, and I went for this crumb, I didn’t read the description of the model . It was my first Mikrotik . And behind the tiny body is just a monster. This is the first router for which I deactivated some of the functionality (System → Packages). Inside is a MIPS 650 MHz processor that can be driven up to 750 MHz or slowed down to 550 MHz . 64MB of RAM . Well, just a full range of settings inside and out. Configure automatic Amazon naming when activating a client via DHCP? Please! BGP, OSPF? Easily. The question of why BGP for this crumb should remain behind the scenes. Firewall? Inside live iptables, you can do just about everything. VLAN, QOS, MPLS, everything for IP, routing - everything is out of the box and everything is easy to configure. Tons of management access - http(s), telnet, ssh, winbox (with wine not just for Windows), mobile robotic apple apps… Proxy server, including a transparent one, VPN - if desired, it is configured and works well . If something is not visible in the settings, there is a wiki from Mikrotik and a terminal. About Wiki, you can say this - comprehensive documentation from the manufacturer. It is possible to create various scripts that will be triggered by events / time and do anything within the router and, I think, not only. Most likely, people who are not very knowledgeable in network technologies will find this router very difficult to set up, but you can invite someone who understands :-) And you can also raise a virtual router on it, say, with dd-wrt . In general, above all praise! True, sometimes it becomes sad that for more than a month nothing has changed in the settings and it works as it should / wants . Even dancing with MTU for Yota 4G was decided . :-) If a thunderstorm comes again with consequences, definitely for Mikrotik. For a person who wants to have full control over the settings of the gateway to the Internet, it is probably impossible to find another solution out of the box on the market, and even at such a low cost.
