You can use them as markers if you like. The color is strong and bright from the top. But you can also take a cup of water and a brush and drag and drop the paint to get a real watercolor feel. You can also apply paint with a wet brush and then transfer the paint to paper. There are many tutorials on You Tube on how to use these markers. There are also 2 blank markers that you can use to fill the canister with water and mix colors. I bought these for my daughter who tried them out in her high school art class last year. She has already made a few drawings and loves how easy they are to use and how much cleaner they are than paste or dry paint.
