Review on ๐Ÿšฒ Topeak MTX Trunk Bag DXP - Enhanced Bicycle Trunk Bag with Sturdy Molded Panels by Darnell Evans

Comfort over quality

I bought an MTX DXP duffel bag and an Explorer duffel bag for overnight commuting and biking. Here is my review after a few days of ownership. Topeak currently makes two sets of MTX line bags/racks, EXP and DXP. I initially bought the EXP for about $34 less, but quickly decided it was too small for my purposes. In truly amazing evidence of excellent customer service, Revain agreed to collect the EXP, which I had already used twice - no questions asked - sent me a prepaid return label and mailed me the larger "DXP" model overnight with no postage . ... The DXP is slightly larger than the EXP and has a horizontal compartment expansion deck that gives me the extra space I need to carry my lunch upright. The water bottle/accessory pocket on the back provides easy access to the house key, handcuff clip and other small items. There is no doubt about it. For me, DXP cost an additional $34. In order to take full advantage of a model, you must purchase one of the Topeak Explorer luggage racks. I bought the basic version, which comes in disc brake or non-disc versions. Be sure to choose the right one. Installing the rack on my 1996 GT Outpost was a bit tricky as it doesn't have allen screws on the seat tube but does have an adapter that worked very well with my previous rack. I thought the frames were interchangeable but instead I had to make some creative efforts to fit a new one. Not a big deal if you like messing around with your bike. The quality of the parts that make up the quick release system also seem a little cheap, but time will tell how they hold up. In fact, the only reason I bought this bag and rack is because of the quick release system. If you don't have to take your bag on and off often, you can certainly find a much better set for the same or less money. But if you're a daily cyclist, a bike tourist who makes a lot of potty stops, or you just live in a bad area, this is a great bag. When you first pick it up you'll probably agree that it looks like a piece of junk, especially very crappy zippers. But when you first arrive at your destination, take it off the shelf and sling it over your shoulder (using the included shoulder strap) and you'll remember exactly why you bought it. "Convenience over qualityโ€ is the buzzword here. Some EXP and DXP owners have complained about the bag rattling on the rack, and many have come up with DIY solutions. I definitely have some rattling in my rig, but it doesn't really bother me as I usually listen to music through the speaker while I'm driving. If you prefer a quiet ride, expect to have to muffle that rumble with some sort of shim. Haven't used this bag in the rain yet, so I can't comment on its "wet" performance, but you should be aware that to my knowledge it's not marketed as waterproof (or even water resistant). They sell him a raincoat, but I only carry a heavy plastic bag in case it suddenly rains. I also pack electronics and other water sensitive items in ziplock plastic bags before putting them in. Overall I am satisfied with this purchase. I like having a suitcase that quickly converts into baskets and is pretty easy to put on and take off. However, I'm hoping someone can fix my zippers the first time I pack too tight and one of them breaks.

Pros
  • Top marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • Good overall, but...
