I bought this purely as a warm layer for day hikes and emergencies. It will live in my son's backpack that stays in the car, so I deliberately bought it too big. For reference, he is 9 1/2 years old, 56 inches tall and weighs 59 pounds (SUPER lean). I have an XXL, which is of course 1 size larger. Normally he would certainly wear XL in this jacket. In the real world he wears a size 10/12. If it was down filled it would be perfect but I didn't feel like dropping the prices and I was tired of looking for second hand. My only real problem is that it barely fits in a pouch. I think they offer the same pouch for all sizes and this shouldn't go beyond XL. I felt like the stitching was going to rip at any moment and as I sit here and look at it they seem to spontaneously snap at any moment. Might have to find something bigger to hold it. Overall very satisfied.
