Review on Sony DVP NC625 5 Disc Changer Black by Mike Lunde

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Slightly fewer features but solid Sony product

This player doesn't support WMA, DVD-Audio and JPEG, and this one isn't even progressive scan, but how many people have a progressive scan TV looking for .player? It's a solid player with a good picture that plays both DVD-R and DVD-RW discs, which was high on my list of requirements. I also tried the Sony DVP-NC665P which is 100% identical to this player except for the progressive scan feature. The buttons can be used to perform basic operations on the device. Discs also load quickly. I found Panasonic's changers (including the S65) to be clunky and unintuitive. They have a silent disc changing mechanism, but it takes practice to get the disc to play unless it's the disc you just put in. Unlike Sony, it's easy to use. An interesting feature, this player automatically searches for another disc to play when you remove the disc. This can be very annoying for two reasons: 1. if the next disc is a CD and DVD-Audio is playing on your TV, you'll be surprised at the overloaded output - the TV's speakers can't handle it, and 2. if the next disc is a DVD, in many cases you can't stop him until he's pre-trained. You can work around this by ejecting the drive and pressing OFF instead of closing it - this prevents it from looking for another drive. I love the remote, I love the picture and I'm a little loyal to Sony so I recommend this product.

Pros
  • 12-bit video DAC with 108MHz processing for pure video (through component video, S-video and composite video outputs)
Cons
  • Some issues
