A year or two

I have tried several Sony DVD players, last this one. After a year and a half he just stopped playing all the records. Keep looking, there must be a better quality product out there.

Pros
  • Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 channel digital surround decoding and output (for use with compatible A/V receivers and speakers)
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly

Picture quality was fantastic

Received this after first using the Samsung 1080I- Tried 720P with DVI connection. I have a Toshiba 51 inch. HD monitor. Samsung was very expensive and the picture quality wasn't as impressive as it should be (highest communication quality). Keep in mind that with this device, if the DVD was burned at a higher resolution, it was fine, but did little to improve older movies. SONY, on the other hand (once set up properly, which can take a while if you're unfamiliar with the new tech) makes this…

Pros
  • Dimensions 16.9 x 3.78 x 16.1 inches (W x H x D)
Cons
  • I can't fault that, everything is fine

Be careful when burning your own VCDs or SVCDs

We draw and use VCDs (Video CDs) at work and we bought one of these units to play music CDs, internal VCDs and our own and commercial DVDs. The documentation states that the player supports all of this plus CD/RW. Not true. The machine will indeed reproduce all of the above, it's just not very good at it. Commercial DVDs seem to work just as well as music CDs, but this player sucks at playing VCDs. The picture is very poor, much worse than any other desktop player I've tried, and the audio on…

Pros
  • 5-disc DVD changer with DVD-Video, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, CD-R, CD-RW support and MP3 CD
Cons
  • Expensive

Slightly fewer features but solid Sony product

This player doesn't support WMA, DVD-Audio and JPEG, and this one isn't even progressive scan, but how many people have a progressive scan TV looking for .player? It's a solid player with a good picture that plays both DVD-R and DVD-RW discs, which was high on my list of requirements. I also tried the Sony DVP-NC665P which is 100% identical to this player except for the progressive scan feature. The buttons can be used to perform basic operations on the device. Discs also load quickly. I found…

Pros
  • 12-bit video DAC with 108MHz processing for pure video (through component video, S-video and composite video outputs)
Cons
  • Some issues
