Review on Wilkins RK1 720A Repair Kits by Patrick Nepal

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Expensive for what you get but still cheaper than replacing the entire valve.

My relief valve started leaking and I remembered there was a repair kit for it. Checking various websites including the local Sprinkler World led me to Revain because they had the lowest price. The kit includes a piece of paper for installing/maintaining/testing the valve but not for a rebuild kit. However, he did provide an exploded view of all the parts that make up the valve and everything was included in the rebuild kit except for the cover and bolts. Here is a summary of the steps I took: 1) Turn off the valve. (if you haven't already) 2) Unscrew the 3 screws from the lantern and set it aside. 3) Remove the lantern. 5) Remove the disc assembly and plates (all as a whole) 6) Remove the washer 7) The o-ring is in the channel. I used an X-ACTO knife to pry off the old o-ring. 8) Remove the spring (the seat for the o-ring won't let it lift so I had to squeeze and twist to loosen it) 9) Remove the cross assembly 10) Use a cloth to soak up the water and check the valve for damage investigate. Now it's time to install the parts from the rebuild kit: 1) Install the valve stem 2) Install the spring (I had to twist and compress on the big end to get it). fully seated under the o-ring channel) 3) Cut off the o-ring grease and squeeze it completely onto your fingers and rub the o-ring all over the ring, lubricate very liberally 4) Install the o-ring into its channel 5) Install the washer and cymbal assembly 6) I had extra lube so I lubricated the underside of the large plastic washer that sits on the o-ring 7) Install the plastic washer (greased side above the o-ring) 8) Unscrew the cover making sure the disc/cymbal assembly shaft is in the center of the cover. 9) Tighten the cap by hand. 10) Install the hood and 3 screws. Tighten all 3 once all are in place. Turn the water back on. It is normal for a small amount of water to flow out of the breaker valve at first, wipe it off the surrounding pipes and keep an eye on the valve. In my case I ran a 5 minute cycle on one of the sprinkler lines to make sure the valve wasn't leaking. The whole process can be completed in 15-20 minutes (if at all)
