Big name filters are prohibitively expensive so this is a great option. They release a lot of charcoal during the soaking step, but after rinsing, I placed them in a bowl of fresh water and didn't notice any additional charcoal release. They fit perfectly in the filter sleeve, I don't feel any difference in coffee with these brands. Although the system can be used without them, they filter out chlorine and a variety of minerals that can clog your coffee maker and affect the machine's flavor and durability. So it was nice to find filters at a reasonable price.
