Review on LG 38WN95C-W: Ultra-Wide Curved Monitor with High Connectivity, 3840x1600P Resolution, 144Hz Refresh Rate by Terry Higgins

Revainrating 4 out of 5

An amazing monitor for the software developer (and gamer at night)

The monitor costs a ton but did a few things for me. First, I wanted to stop using two 27" monitors side by side. The bezels and size of my old setup meant I felt like I was always on the lookout and turning my head a ton. Sounds weird, but I turn around to find something that totally bugged me.Second, I wanted to be able to play games from my windows machine but work with a macbook and get this one wired connection with thunderbolt 3 Here's the monitor perfectly solved my two main problems.. Games look great in ultra wide mode and my MBP 2018 gets full power from a single cable.Oh and the TB3 connection supports 144Hz at full resolution The.Fantasy.The downsides here are relatively minor but still annoying.First, when using TB3, my Mac defaults to using the monitor's speakers.I bring those speakers to my desktop speaker echerset and it's great. However, I can no longer control the volume using the keyboard media controls and it's SUPER annoying. I need to change the volume in spec. IC Apps (Spotify, Browser, whatever). My windows box sends audio over HDMI and this setup also allows the speakers to be shared across the monitor so it's still nice. The second annoying part is just the number of USB-A ports. There should be at least two more and anyone like me will find that very annoying too. I don't care about the lack of a PIP with TB3 and a displayport, but I've also seen it annoy people. The last criticism is the height adjustment and the size of the base. The base is very deep and (even with a deep desk) brings my keyboard right to the edge of my desk when I want to use my laptop screen at the same time. Raising the monitor all the way up is still too low to cover the bottom of the screen. I ended up taking some scrap wood and building a monitor stand to give me more control over the height of the monitor and make it look better. Still too deep. I have to cut a notch in the stand so my laptop sits a little lower on my desk. [Update 10/19/2021] I've been using this thing for about 6 months. i still love it I started using a free utility called Monitor Control to control the monitor's brightness and volume using the Mac media keys. Fixed big issues for me. I'm using EasyRes to set the resolution and refresh rate, but it doesn't support 144 when I restart the Mac. The frequency always drops to 75 Hz. Annoying though. Fur. I've found that I despise the power button. It's not reliable at all and the menus are slow to display. You will end up having to make a lot of double taps or inappropriate decisions. It's not a deal breaker for me as I don't switch inputs by the ton, but you might. I would recommend this to everyone. I like this size for development and gaming.
