Good gear, wrong material

Too expensive for a plastic gear. Okay, here's a design flaw/mistake Lexus made in the steering column. The metalworm eventually eats into the nylon plastic teeth causing this error. It was a silly combination at first as I am a former satellite dish installer in the early 80's and have seen this from horizon to horizon. The manufacture of motorized mounts did this to save cost and simplify. To make them they had to use machined or forged steel soaked in gear oil, or bronze or zinc plated to prevent corrosion, or even hardened stainless steel Plastic construction is good for cost effectiveness and comfort, it will only cause the steering wheel to fail again.

Pros
  • Country of origin: India
Cons
  • Very expensive
