Originally our cat bought a round plastic cone due to her allergy/sensitivity to flying which resulted in her constantly biting and gnawing at the skin around the bottom half. She eventually shattered the plastic by constantly kicking and tearing it with her hind legs. The first day I put this on her I didn't see her trying to kick it or seem nervous. At first glance this thing seems bulky, but if you go for a plastic cone you'll find that it weighs about 1/4 less than plastic and 1/4 the weight is on the neck. She managed to take the thing off at night, but I was very generous with the velcro so I guess I just untied it. Much better than plastic, I highly recommend it if your cat or dog destroys a variety of plastic.
