Review on πŸ’‘ Efficient and Secure Siemens ECSBPK05 Generator Mechanical Interlock for Seamless Generator Control by Mark Allen

Great, safe and economical alternative to automatic transmission

Media failed to load. After weighing my options I decided to use this latch to hook up my portable standby generator instead of a transfer switch. My reasoning was threefold. First, I had the knowledge and skills to safely complete any job on my own. Second, the lock cost me less than $20 with shipping compared to $350-$600 for an automatic switch. Third, the interlock allows me to power the whole house while being limited to just a few branch circuits with an automatic switch. This lock is manufactured by Siemens for installation in its own load center line. As a result I found it fit perfectly, stays in place very securely and works exactly as it should. Siemens makes various configurations of this unit to fit the various box layouts they sell under the Siemens, Murray, and ITE names. Choose carefully and you will have an easy job and a safe transfer system when the job is done. This lock has a major advantage over the many "aftermarket" options available. Since it attaches directly to the circuit breakers and not to the load center front panel, it stays in place even when the load center cover is removed. This prevents both "networks" from being accidentally turned on at the same time, creating a "backfeed" situation. This type of interlock must be installed directly below the existing main switch, so you will need to relocate an existing feeder. Chains are currently in these positions. Because of this, installation will likely require a little more work than opening the panel, sliding it into place, and installing a screw. I've included a few images in the attached video to give you a better idea of the job done. . Finally, when you're done installing, make sure you post clear instructions and a warning in the download center for others to see. The ones you see in the pictures I made myself as it is not included. Overall I think this is a great product, well built and very reasonably priced.

Pros
  • Breakers, load centers and fuses
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for elderly
