
The sound gets better, but not as much as we'd like. If your subject is about 30 cm away from the microphone, everything is fine. Anything over 2 feet and the sound quality is unacceptable. Is it better than built in? Of course, but the built-in features are so terrible that everything can be improved. That's fine for a family video and the like, but why spend money on it? A preamp will likely help you upgrade your microphone, or better yet, get a separate audio recorder.
