Review on ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Black Tilt Wireless Hydrometer and Thermometer by Sam Calderon

I was hesitant but glad I bought

I was very hesitant to purchase this due to the dance values displayed during fermentation. What's the purpose of data points if they're imprecise, right? Well I'm very glad I made the purchase. I no longer have to go down to the basement to check on the bubbling airlock. I just open my phone and look. The app is terrible so I used a spare Pi Zero WI that was laying around and installed Tiltpi. The Pi's image is a bit clunky and requires some manual intervention to get things like the time zone set up properly. But it works amazingly well. I wrote a small script that parses the data from the log.csv file and sends it to the Home Assistant via MQTT. However, remember that gravity measurements are inaccurate except when fermentation begins and ends. You can get a good idea of how things are by looking at a trend chart. Temperature measurements are also useless. The embankment floats around and often floats against the wall of the digester. So when the wrapper heater is turned on, the tilt reading is about 2F higher than a sensor deployed in the middle of the fermenting wort because it is under direct heat. Finally, it's a little pricey for so many falls. But if you have money to burn, it's still extremely useful.

Pros
  • . Instantly check the specific gravity and temperature of your drink as it ferments.
Cons
  • Style 90
