Many people like to keep their aquariums within a fairly narrow temperature range, although fish can tolerate fluctuations. Perhaps it's better for the life of the heater if the temperature can fluctuate within an acceptable range, so the heater doesn't have to be cycled on and off as often to stay at that magic number. This might have been an intentional design aspect of this heater as it isn't the best device in the first place. However, 8 months later the heater is working just as well as it did on day one. That means if you aim for 78 degrees Fahrenheit, you'll hit 75-80 during the day. In most cases, this does not matter much, since the fluctuations are many times greater than in the wild. However, this can become a real problem when you are keeping fish that are poorly compatible with growing temperatures, or hand-reared fish that are more easily stressed by changes in water parameters.
