I realized I needed a kotatsu so I was obsessively researching how to get one and oh my god they aren't in the US to get cheap. This one looked too expensive and I was afraid of breaking it and I was concerned that as I'm a tall woman (which is actually normal) I wouldn't be tall enough. I've looked everywhere. I even considered the IKEA coffee table a hack, but I really wanted peace of mind for the fire safety and quality of life inherent in a real thing (like a topper, it spans the entire width of the table!) that you can find cheaply and used ones on Japanese auction sites, but sourcing services need hundreds to ship anything at least slightly heavy. So I really had a choice: spend $200 or $400+. Just buy this one. Installation couldn't be easier. Very easy. It's plastic but strong. However, I still don't put my full weight on it when I stand up. The topper is double sided, and I dunno, it's just nice to have one made for that. It's nice when it's completely flush with the table. The heating cable has a hook through which a loop can be threaded so it never gets in the way. The heater is very hot, I had to turn it off. The switch is in Japanese but the small "person walking" icon is on. You need the converter everyone mentions but everyone recommends 1000 watts. You don't need 1000 watts. The heater only consumes 300W, just read the description. Save money and get 500 watts. There is a switch on the back between 100V and 120V.
