I actually bought these to use as large flat surfaces just to test stain color mixes on spruce wood, not for their intended purpose as a marker. As other reviewers point out, there are definitely warp issues. I ordered two units so ended up with 4 and they all had some level of warpage. When preparing the surface I ended up sanding a lot with 80 grit just to try and level the surface a bit before moving on to a finer grit to prepare it for painting. In seller's defense: They are sold as raw materials for crafting! This is not a finished shelf or picture frame. Wood is not canvas. You still need to think about proper wood surface preparation before staining or painting. Ideally there shouldn't be any distortion, but that's not too difficult to work around. Using a decent cordless random orbital sander, I smoothed the surface a bit and was up and running within 15 minutes.
