Loud and dirty but gets the job done

I had this coffee grinder a while ago and the first thing that struck me about almost sending it back was how dirty it gets when grinding fed into the portafilter. Left to its own devices and depending on various factors like grind time, beans used, and whether you grind directly into a portafilter (like me) this thing makes a HUGE mess. As the grist builds up and reaches the bottom of the dispenser, static electricity will cause the grist to fly off the sides and create a significant counter clutter. Luckily, a cheap aluminum dosing funnel solved this problem for me, so I highly recommend getting a funnel to match your portafilter if you buy this grinder. The downside to this solution is that the rear portafilter support rod can no longer be used with the funnel, so you have to hold it during the grinding process. I've seen some people carve a notch to accommodate this, but to be honest I don't really care about holding it in place so I just use that method. The funnel makes for a much cleaner process. The only downside to this thing, however, is the noise level. We have a fairly open concept of the house that permeates the entire apartment. It's not great if you get up early and your c/o is a light sleeper. To my knowledge most grinders are pretty loud so I don't know how much worse they are than others. In terms of performance, I am very satisfied. The wide and precise adjustment options on this device really allow you to fine-tune your grind size. As a newbie to espresso grinding, I was very surprised at how to adjust the settings for different beans. I figured it wouldn't really take that much from one brand/type to another to adjust the settings, but damn I was wrong. However, once you dial in, the 3 preset runtime options are great. Just click on the desired preset and you're done. Perfect every time! I also appreciate the detachable funnel. If I decide to use a different mix when the jar is already full, it's relatively easy to swap out. I find I don't do this as often as I thought I would, but it's still nice to be able to do this without making a big deal out of it. All in all I am very happy with this coffee grinder and would recommend it to anyone who might be concerned. Downgrading some points for the default location that makes it so messy and for the noise. Of course, both of these problems could be solved by Baratza if they really wanted to.

Pros
  • Fingers crossed
Cons
