A pair of these 500GB Crucial SSDs are specially designed to be used as cache drives (one read cache, one write cache) Bought for the new Synology DS 720+. I have always been satisfied with Crucial products over the past 30 years and have not hesitated to order them. They have been listed as compatible on the Crucial System Update website. I found the cost of the discs very fair. Ordering through Revain is no problem. The modules are physically very easy to install into the bottom of the DS, Synology Storage Manager recognizes them immediately and identifies them perfectly; but there is always a health warning. Since I'm a brand new DiskStation, I let DSM update to the latest version and then do my work overnight (>12 hours) to perform physical integrity checks on all new drives. The results were ok for hard drives. Not for SSD. Both SSDs carry a health warning. Click and poke around, SMART status is good for an SSD. Then suddenly they become normal. Interesting. But after restarting the system, the warnings come back. So it's either a real compatibility issue and/or a bug in the DSM and/or Syno intentionally doesn't like spare parts. I don't have the stamina to risk my data and I don't want to wait for a fix from Synology or jump through hoops to trade it. B. backing up data again, restoring factory settings, etc., which are usually associated with replacing a hard drive and restoring factory settings. After doing further research on SSD cache drives, I found that if an SSD cache drive fails, it will deny access to the HDD storage pool (this may change in DSM 7 later in 2021) . and requires an uninstall procedure before it fails, etc. Read about the many issues people have with any brand of SSD cache drives. Which makes me want to return them. Sad. I don't have any other device with this connection interface. Maybe I could try to find an external case for them. In any case. I had high hopes for the improved DS over the next few years. Conclusion: With Synology DSM in its current form 2020/01 with DSM 6.2.3-nnnn, these SSDs cause a problem.
