I DO NOT RECOMMEND pre-wetting these filters. Every time I did this the filter burst and I ended up with a mug full of coffee grounds. I don't go crazy over it or anything, just gently dampen the filter, add my soil and gently pour in water, pretty standard stuff. You can tell when the filter is cracked because your water falls RIGHT through the cone and when it drains you can see the coffee go with it. I've wasted too much coffee this way not to learn my lesson: a little papery taste is way better than lots of coffee grounds.
