Impressive accuracy - you can use an opaque cover
I tried this with an ESP32 board. The measurement capabilities of the VL53L1X seem impressive for such an inexpensive device. Millimetre-accurate up to several meters away and available libraries for ESP32 and other microcontrollers - easy I2C setup. The measuring frequency is also quite good (up to 50 Hz). One thing I noticed is some difficulties when measuring in daylight (although my conditions are quite demanding - water surface, reflections, motion). I think an infrared transmissive window (supplied with some other VL53L1X products) might help.
