Tried two of these units and both failed the same way. The device comes in a striped RAID0 configuration, which is best for performance and uses the entire 8TB, but if one of the drives fails, you could lose the entire volume; So in my case I would need two of these devices, one as a backup for the other which was redundant. So I configured JBOD mode instead, which shows it as 2 independent 4TB volumes. The problem was that these volumes didn't stay mounted. They assembled and then separated after a few seconds. I returned the first block thinking it was a hardware failure, but then the second block came and behaved exactly the same. (I contacted WD tech support and waited about 45 minutes; they offered to call me back within an hour and ended up calling me back but outside of the hour window; we never connected and I ended up returning the second unit since it's not worth spending a lot of time troubleshooting.) I'm assuming it's a software or firmware incompatibility - and it will likely be fixed at some point. So unless you use it in JBOD mode, you can safely ignore this review. and even if you're using JBOD, it's possible that WD fixed the issue if it's been a while. (Or it's also possible that my configuration was something special and even now you won't see the same problem.)
