Couldn't get it to work in JBOD mode

Tried two of these units and both failed the same way. The device comes in a striped RAID0 configuration, which is best for performance and uses the entire 8TB, but if one of the drives fails, you could lose the entire volume; So in my case I would need two of these devices, one as a backup for the other which was redundant. So I configured JBOD mode instead, which shows it as 2 independent 4TB volumes. The problem was that these volumes didn't stay mounted. They assembled and then separated…

Works well - initial configuration could be improved

I've only had it in my hands for a few weeks but so far I'm very happy with my purchase. Bought as a spare external hard drive Maxtor One Touch I was backing up Time Machine for about two years when it suddenly expired and I have no more backups. :(I use both drives for Time Machine. That way I have multiple independent backups in case the drive burns again. The Thunderbolt connection is probably an unnecessary but worthwhile upgrade over my old USB 2.0 in terms of speed. The backup copied…

Warning: Non-Hardware RAID

I just connected this drive to my Mac Pro and it works as advertised. It's also quiet and accessing the spare drive is pretty easy. However, I was surprised to find that Apple's software RAID is used for mirroring instead of directly implementing hardware RAID. Why should you care? Because in my experience Apple's software RAID is not very good. Specifically, when it detects a read error on a disk, it considers the entire disk as bad. Let's assume that Disk #2 actually fails. You pull it out…

Great so far! on External Hard Drives

Updated September 9, 2015 Last updated. Just wanted to let everyone know that there is a way to encrypt a RAID volume without purchasing the app. Instructions can be found here http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/81504/why-doesnt-filevault-work-on-a-raid-volume---------------- - ------------------Update January 27, 2015 I am writing this update as a public announcement that the Error Correction Disk or TLER is not as easy as I thought. I had a gut feeling that I should learn more about…

NEVER BUY THIS PRODUCT

This is not an upgrade, not a seller, this is purely an upgrade, not the product itself. I've had a My Book Thunderbolt Duo 8TB from a year to a year and a half. This is the worst experience I have ever had with a hard drive or hard drive company. Western Digital sent me 4 replacement units for my original purchase as the case, not the drives, continues to fail. If one drive fails so the RAID 1 setup sync doesn't work, it won't switch to the second drive like RAID 1. It just disappears from…
