Engineer's Rating: works well; Installation instructions could be improved; hidden setting for lithium battery

I am an electrical engineer and did the installation myself in about 3.5 hours. The system is a big improvement over my old Parallax 6345: it charges faster and the battery doesn't boil as much. There were some issues with the installation guide. They tell you to unplug nine household 12v wires from the old panel and then reconnect them to the new one. In my case (Parallax 6345 replacement) the wires were soldered to the old panel so I had to cut them off and clean the ends. The sag was only about an inch, so you had to be very careful. The new panel then has additional nets (connection points) to the left side of the board. So if you want your old circuit #1 to be in the new #1 position, the wires need to be extended an inch to the left, which in my case wasn't possible. I was able to complete the installation by leaving the new #1-3 blank and starting with circuit #4 which is more closely related to the physical location of the old #1. There were also some problems with the order of work during installation. new 12V panel and new cable paths; following the instructions would not be possible, resulting in insufficient cable length. Once installed, the new system charged my FLA (Flooded Lead Acid) batteries much faster. Please note that this charger model "PDxxxx-V" can be quickly configured to work best with Lithium Iron Phosphate (Lithium) batteries. There is a small, easily accessible jumper that switches the charger from "Charge Master" (for all lead-acid batteries) to "Lithium". See photo. On a lithium setting, the charger has a continuous output of 14.6V. The maximum main charging voltage is 14.4V and drops when the battery is almost fully charged, so switching to lithium will charge your lithium battery faster. There is nothing in the official documentation that discusses this additional feature, but I have confirmed it with PD Technical Support. (By the way, PD support was extremely quick and helpful.) So this is a great charger for your current lead-acid batteries, and if you're going to switch to lithium, this charger can adapt.

Pros
  • This converter/charger will not boil the battery
Cons
  • Cable is shorter than others
