I guess some regulators require all detectors to beep that annoyingly insistent tone when the battery is low. The old one I replaced was hooked up to the AC and was still doing it in the middle of the night and when I unplugged it the alarm went off waking the rest of the house and I almost fell down the stairs. However, this one chirps when the battery is low, but stops chirping as soon as I detach it from the mounting base. No alarm, no chirp, just turns off. I can throw it on the kitchen table and change the battery if I have one. It's not that I don't have two other detectors doing the exact same job.
