In general these are regular knee pads. They should have added a little more padding in the main knee area. I had to buy some EVO foam and add it to that area. The top strap was about an inch shorter so I sewed it on. The kneecap isn't hard plastic, more like softer plastic with a thin layer of foam covering it. Tarmac, but if you fall I think they'll take the first hit pretty well and save your knees. Seams are single throughout the brace but crossover at stress points with peripheral padding above and below the knee, thick enough to protect but unbearably hot in hot weather. Another issue I had is that after a while the bottom Velcro loses grip and the top rectangular brace moves sideways when you tighten the strap, which when bending your knee pushes your foot out or hits the bottom padding , which of course makes them uncomfortable. At first they look nice, but after a while the velcro no longer holds and they start to move, even when worn outside of pants. If your leg is fairly straight when riding this might be for you, but if your knees are bent (sport bikes) I wouldn't recommend these pads
