Steel cones and gauges suit me perfectly. Personally I don't like plugs on my own ears so I didn't use them as I got bigger but the cones worked very well for what they were intended for. Give yourself 2-3 weeks for your lobes to adjust to size as you increase the size and it should work just fine. I've used a little balm each time and they work great. The rubber stoppers also keep the sensors in place well.
