First of all I'm a beginner so take this with a grain of salt, as they say... I fixed a rusty boat trailer, essentially adding metal where the metal is rusting. The welder was more than strong enough to pierce my 3/32 bars and place 1/8" steel and 3/16" and 1/4" steel in the tongue area. A friend recommended I do two passes over the heavier steel, which I did, except my bumpy welds required a lot of grinding (engineering), it came out perfect. I recommend getting a 4-1/2 inch angle grinder with a couple of flap wheels and a couple of twisted wire grinding wheels to remove corrosion and excess weld buildup. It took me some time to master the technique. I recommend setting aside a few hours for test welds before working on your prized items!
