Revainrating 2 out of 5

I wish I were the hipster that would love this bag.

This is a painful review to write. The bag is almost perfect. I want to love it, I truly do, and it has a LOT going for it. But, the minuses mean I am going to replace this bag -- therefore the best I can do is give 2 stars. Fix the strap issues and it is a 4-5 star bag. Add a slim pocket and it is a 5 star bag. Here is the deal. If you are a hipster with your mirrorless camera, your ipad or "air", and your 16 oz bottle of water, you will LOVE this bag. It looks so rugged and you will never see its flaws. Honestly, it IS built pretty ruggedly, so, you can almost pretend you are a field photographer.I bought this bag because I was made fun of for using military intended bags as my camera bag.PROS: it is mostly well built. Nice components, well made. The interior padding is well done and I am confident I can use my bag as a pillow without damaging my gear. Waterproofing is a great touch -- I added a camping spray to the outside, but, the inclusion of a water resistant bag liner was WELL thought out and an impressive addition. Sizing is pretty darn good. It fits a full body DLSR with 3-4 additional lenses without problem (I do 1 large, and then double stack a prime and a "throwaway" zoom) all this without appearing bulky. I was originally concerned about speed of access to the bag and the front pocket, but, in the end, the snaps are quick to disengage and it ends up being pretty rapid access. OTOH, closing the bag is a slower process -- I usually dont care about this. A 3-5" access to a camera is good. A 10-15" 'seal up' is less important to me -- The good photo is in access time, not packing time.Semi-PROS: Side pockets are rugged but could be bigger -- I like that they have an enclosed bottom so that I can put smaller items in there without fear of losing them. It will work great for your 16 oz Dasani or whatever you drink. But I had to strap a larger water bottle to the shoulder strap. Front pocket is pretty roomy but cannot be accessed without disengaging the wraparound straps. Overall, I would love a "slim" pocket for batteries/lens filters or SD cards, but, I was ok without it -- ymmv. Wraparound straps could be argued that they should be completely wraparound, but, honestly, I am not carrying 40 lbs in this bag, so, it will be fine and sit better.CONS: strap strap strap strap strap. This is where the bag design feels like a hipster design. If all you carry is your 16oz Dasani, your Pentax Mirrorless, your iPad and your Moleskine notebook you will LOVE this bag -- although you would probably be lamenting the lack of pen pockets. Anything much heavier and you will notice. The strap mounting is not on a swivel, The strap rings WILL rotate out of place. The strap adjustments WILL not hold. When the strap rings rotate, ALL weight is working to open that ring. I can secure the strap rings (sew on the bag side), but, because this is not a swivel, unless my shoulder hangs over my hip, the force will work against the fix. AND heaven forbid you try to wear this cross shoulder or on your back. As mentioned, these are quality parts, so, I did not notice the rings expanding -- but, experience tells me they will over time :(So -- I debate. It is easy enough to secure the strap adjustment buckles. But, the strap rings really I think are the deal breaker for me.

Pros
  • The Evecase Large Canvas Messenger Bag in Gray offers unbeatable value for money, combining functionality, style, and durability at an affordable price point
Cons
  • The bag's flap closure may not be very secure and may accidentally open when you're carrying it around
