This gate is very modern and a welcome improvement on the wooden gate we use. We placed this gate at the base of our staircase. We have 2 1/2 years and 13 months and no child gets the door open. I'll start by saying that the manual was a bit difficult to read. Some of the words were printed in gray on white paper. It was very difficult for my husband to read. He had to go to a window or a well-lit room to read these parts. The gate is very easy to open for adults. Many of the gates we've used in the past have been a bit difficult to understand. The bottom of the gate has latches on both sides so you can decide which way you want the gate to open. We added an extension to allow the gate to fit the hole at the base of the stairs. It was very easy to add an extension to the side of the gate. The gate comes with a tool to rotate the handle to extend the gate. The manual suggests screwing the holder into the wall for the ends of the gate to go in to keep it from sliding back and forth. My husband wasn't a fan of drilling more holes in our wall, so we lengthened the gate enough to be stable without screws. Both children pushed and pulled him and he didn't move. So I would say that you may or may not use wall screws.
