Although I think this is a good sharpening method, please note that you cannot use a workbench to level other whetstones. You may be able to flatten a softer stone, but using it to flatten a harder whetstone will ruin the extra side of the diamond stone. It still feels rough, but it doesn't cut very well. Attempting to sharpen a wood chisel on the damaged side of the extra layer showed very little progress. I made a lot more progress (it went a lot faster) using only the side of the course that wasn't damaged as it wasn't being used to line the other whetstones. I don't know if the diamond's sharp edges were somehow damaged or if they came loose, but the stone didn't cut. Very few chips (chips), if any, are produced when using the damaged side, and it took forever to see any progress in creating a new edge.
